Sts. Anargyri Chapter No. 5005 Philoptochos Society

The History of Philoptochos in Jacksonville

The early days of the Greek Orthodox Church in Jacksonville were marked by hardship. It was the era of The Great Depression when money was scarce and needs were many. The newly acquired church building on Laura Street required improvements, and the mortgage on the building was an ongoing financial concern.

The women of the parish mobilized and went door to door, business to business, asking for donations to provide the necessary funds to restore the church building. In addition they gave assistance to families facing foreclosure and provided payment for funerals and burials, sewed altar cloths, the altar boys’ robes and maintained the housekeeping duties of the church.

These women put aside pride and status to do good and establish an example for future generations. They were Philoptochos before there was a Philoptochos. This is our legacy. We have large shoes to fill, but together we can do it.
